Did you enjoy A Chance Encounter? Please don't forget to rate the game!

Shackled to the wheel of an abandoned cart, this hopeless, handsome rogue is in need of a helping hand. Is he compelling enough to be released, or are you so cruel as to leave him to his fate?

A Chance Encounter is a small-scale visual novel utilizing minimal assets to tell a unique story in under 1k words. It was developed for the 2025 O2A2 VN Jam.

This short game incorporates subtly suggestive themes such as flirting with the player. It does not contain any explicit content.

A Chance Encounter is a bite-sized visual novel utilizing minimal assets. Players will enjoy ~30 minutes of gameplay with 1,000 words, four endings, an original soundtrack, and a single illustration.

It also features one rakishly charming (yet thoroughly pathetic) rogue.

Terra Babcock - Story dev, narrative design, writing, programming
Johan Faulstich - Story dev, character design, illustration, copywrite
Walksoftly - Original soundtrack, miscellaneous
BaiYu - Social media, miscellaneous
Jett Barker - Voice of "Chance"

For a $3 donation you can download the illustration pack, which includes four high-res images (chained/unchained) of the "Chance" sprite; two in his in-game outfit and the other two, shirtless... a unique version of "Chance" which does not appear in-game. It also includes the solo background.

Was Flynn Rider your inspiration for this? lol

That was a delightful little game! I love the art and the voice acting, and you do a great job of pulling me into the story and making me like Chance in such a short time and with so few words

(+1)

Struggled to get a good ending, but at least I've seen all 4 :D Nice art composition

A fun story, fantastic art and the voice acting paired really nicely with Chance ~ loved all of their expressions!

The voice acting is so charming! I loved the different options and all the different expressions Chance has. I really love how vastly different each ending is, especially with such a strict word count.

Much appreciated, pamsdrabbles! Jett really did a fantastic job bringing “Chance” to life. Thanks for playing, and we’re glad you enjoyed!

Holaaa, una pregunta van a colocar el juego próximamente en idioma español?. En verdad siento que tendría mucha fama si es colocado en español :)

Got the "golden"/freedom ending first try just by snarking at him and wound up rather liking him at first from that, but when I checked the bad ends I really underestimated how crappy he was.

I mean, coming up with a ridiculous lie to try to bribe/bluff you into releasing him? Just makes me feel sorry he thinks the lie is necessary.

Robbing you and running away after you release him? Sad, but I get it- he had no money and being completely dependent on a stranger for everything for the entire foreseeable future is rough.

But going out of his way to chain you up while you're unconscious, at literally no benefit to himself*, fully aware you'll likely die a slow, painful death, even though you just saved him from the exact same thing? In every single scenario where you free him besides the "best" possible ending? That seemed too harsh for a character who's meant to be liked.

I'm aware of the word count limits of the jam, but I still think Chance could feel more fleshed out if we got a few more choices/endings with him- like a middle ground ending where he hits the player, and they wake up penniless but unchained, or the player helping him without showing suspicion/asking for a reward, calling him out on his lie and choosing to help him anyways... or even just choosing to ditch him while telling him you saw the rock, on a replay after the chained end. Petty vengeance always feels nice.

*(I do know you could theoretically chase after him for revenge, but like, c'mon dude be competent. How long was the MC out for, without even knowing his name or what direction he would take on the road afterwards.)

Agree, even if he wasn't written out to be a particularly nice protagonist, heck, even a villain, there could have been a bit more depth to the interactions between him and the MC. The game had a clever idea tho, so I'll be happy to see whatever the dev releases in the future!

Howdy Snailsnip,

Thanks for the comment. Chance is not necessarily supposed to be a likeable character. Our intention was to let the player form their own opinion about him based on his--and the player's--actions in all four endings. As for him clonking the player over the head in 'every single scenario where you free him...' there is only one scenario where this happens. In a world of endless possibilities and player choice, who knows how it otherwise might play out? Unfortunately we only had 1k words to work with.

Anyway, we appreciate your input, and hope you'll keep an eye on our other projects. Thanks for playing!

i love love love the pathetic muddy man chained to a cart! he looks so cute, and jett did a great job voicing him. there is a small mistake with chance being unshackled even if you choose not to free him, but overall i really liked this!

A suspicous man you've left me with! I usually like to explore the different paths in vns, but with this voice actor, he convinced me to let him be free and that's that LOL.
